The subject originally suggested to the writer was ‘The Just Limits of Taxation,’ but this presented difficulties, for there can be no just limits to an unjust tax; and in due course it became clear that the nature rather than the limits of taxation must be considered.
Description
During the four decades since this essay was written the moral strain implicit in the continual degeneration of all money-values in real terms has played a large, indeed a crucial part, in the degeneration of all other values: social, educational, sexual, political, commercial, and religious. Money now rules all, enters into virtually everything. This is not a matter of ‘economic theory’; it is a matter of everyday experience.
